- Go Forth and Eat Freely – with MixtBag
Go Forth and Eat FreelyHolidays and any food-related outings causes immediate stress and anxiety for many families with food allergies. For me, there is always the added worry of feeling a little more laid back when we are socializing which (may) lead to a possible allergy trigger. It happens to all of us at one time of another- we are happy, we are relaxed and sometimes we just do something and we don’t even realize it until it’s too late. How do we prevent even these tiny little mishaps? Don’t fight the food war, join it….Healthy Crunching
So, I have this self-proclaimed issue with people who crunch too loudly…it’s similar to nails on a chalkboard. I know people can’t help it, I understand that nobody can control how much their head vibrates when they chew or how it echoes through my brain but I wanted to get past this. I wanted a holiday where healthy and patriotic and snacking all went hand in hand. I wanted to share the crunch factor in a way that people were asking for more and I (even with my noise issues) would be happy to share. The wonderful people at RW Garcia sent us a bunch of their Yellow & Blue and Red & Yellow MixtBag chips. How else do you feed 130 hungry people and show patriotism? (which, sadly, I just realized the whole color and July 4th relevance while writing this post…I’m slow). I found RW Garcia products years ago as well and they are one of the top allergy-friendly snack items that I recommend to my clients that I consult with (they are also in my ebook). When I began looking more into what was in our foods as well as the labels, their Non-GMO label and use of vegetables to enhance the flavors of their products made me jump at introducing them to my (then) younger, picky eaters. My children never saw the ingredients, they just saw chips and ate them. Win for this mom, win for my children because they are snacking on heartier, healthier chips and win for those who we share with around us. - RW Garcia: ‘We’re the best kept secret in snack food’ – Food Business News
By, Monica Watrous
NEW YORK — RW Garcia, a San Jose, Calif.-based maker of specialty snacks, introduced a new line of tortilla chips made with pulses at the Summer Fancy Food Show, held June 26-28 in New York. Varieties include black bean with red quinoa and chia seeds, chickpea with red bell pepper flakes, and lentil with amaranth.
The timing of the product launch couldn’t be better, said Genelle Chetcuti, senior director of marketing. Her mother is Margaret Garcia, vice-president of sales and marketing for the family-owned company, who first learned about pulse crops last year.
“We started playing with the idea and doing some R.&D., and all of a sudden it comes out that 2016 was declared the International Year of Pulses,” Ms. Chetcuti said. “And we thought, ‘This is timely.’ It makes perfect sense. It goes with our sustainability efforts. They’re so nutrient dense and have protein and fiber and are low in fat.”

Finger on the Pulse
As most readers have no doubt heard, it’s the International Year of Pulses, designated as such by the United Nations to position pulses as a primary source of protein and other essential nutrients. This goal was already on the minds of a good number of exhibitors at the Summer Fancy Food Show. In addition to chickpea-, lentil-, bean- and other pulse-based noshes from the likes of Beanfields, Beanitos, The Good Bean and Biena, RW Garcia displayed a new line of pulse tortilla chips whose three varieties feature 26 percent black bean lentil and chickpea, respectively, along with ancient grains. - RW Garcia honors International Year of Pulses with new tortilla chip line
SAN JOSE, CALIF. (June 23, 2016) – A new line of Pulse Chips will join RW Garcia’s artisan tortilla chips and crackers on store shelves this fall. The family-owned-and-operated snack brand will debut three new pulse crop-based varieties at the Summer Fancy Food Show, held from June 26-28 in New York City.
“We’ve been eager to utilize pulse crops, which are versatile, earth-friendly and delicious,” explained Genelle Chetcuti, RW Garcia’s senior director of marketing. “We wanted to create an entirely new product line to honor the International Year of the Pulse.”
The leading maker of corn-based artisan snacks for more than 30 years, RW Garcia has created three Pulse Chip varieties that are a delicious source of protein, are high in fiber and low in fat. They are:
• Black Bean & Ancient Grains: With just eight ingredients and a base that’s 26 percent black beans, these chips have an earthy flavor punctuated by red quinoa seeds and chia seeds.
• Chickpea & Ancient Grains: These chips have a subtle kick from red bell pepper flakes, and a mellow base that is made of 26 percent chickpeas.
• Lentil & Ancient Grains: Made of 26 percent green lentils, these chips also contain protein- and mineral-rich amaranth, which gives a nutty flavor.
Like the brand’s other tortilla chips and crackers, the new Pulse Chips will be free of additives and preservatives, with clean ingredient decks. They are Non-GMO Project Verified, certified gluten-free and kosher, and produced in the company’s wholly-owned peanut- and tree nut-free facility. The Pulse Chips are sold in 7-oz. bags and have an SRP of $3.99. They will be sold in HEB stores beginning in July, and other fine retailers nationwide.
The United Nations declared 2016 as the “International Year of Pulses” (IYP), in order to position pulses as a primary source of essential nutrients and to promote broad discussion, cooperation, understanding and awareness of the crop and its growers around the world. According to the UN, pulses are part of a healthy diet – they are rich in vitamins and minerals, provide a low-fat source of protein and contain high fiber content; they have also been shown to play a role in preventing illnesses such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
The sustainability of pulse crops was an important factor for RW Garcia, which is committed to sustainable practices and social good across its supply chain and production facilities. “We’ve always been the brand with heart, and now we’re the brand with pulses!” Chetcuti said. Pulses are part of rotational crops, have a positive impact on soil quality and have a lower carbon footprint than most animal sources of protein. RW Garcia prides itself on sourcing the finest ingredients available, and sources the chickpeas, black beans and lentils for these chips from growers in the U.S. and Canada.
